Data & Analytics Program

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Good decisions depend on good data. For the Victorian water industry, intelligent data can translate into cost-efficiencies and improved customer service. It is also crucial in meeting the challenges of increasing operational complexity due to ageing infrastructure, climate change and population growth.

This program focuses on trialling new and emerging technologies to help with this. We look for tools and opportunities that improve data management and analysis, and help them transition to digital utilities of the future.

Program Manager: Peter Prevos, Coliban Water

Deputy Program Managers: Joe Curtis, Melbourne Water

State of Play report 2023

This project reflects our ability to facilitate knowledge sharing across our industry and also aims to make sure our Data & Analytics projects answer industry needs.

State of Play Report is now available to our members.

Smart Sewer Project

This project aims to develop new techniques for blockage detection and sewer spill early warning, so that water corporations can prevent or mitigate blockages and spills.

It is based in Lorne, which was selected because of its changing population resulting in additional sewer network flows during the tourist months.

In partnership with Barwon Water, we have provided a Deakin University PhD scholarship to collect and analyse data from the sewer network to predict blockages and spills.

Past & completed projects

The following projects have been completed under our Data & Analytics Program. Please email us if you’d like more information about the projects, including outcomes and reports.

  • Automating sewer CCTV footage - trialling technology to automate the manual review of sewer CCTV footage, with the potential to achieve significant operational efficiencies and drive industry change.

  • FSA Data trial - a pilot and trial to demonstrate the value of cleaned time-series data for water infrastructure planning, which led to a business-as-usual solution offering for our members.

  • OSIsoft PI trial - trialling a cloud-based data management solution at Lower Murray and East Gippsland Water.

  • Water industry digitisation - assessing the digitisation of Victoria’s water corporations, including five key recommendations.

  • Waternamics software - a successful trial with Western water, including IBM and Veolia, to monitor assets and systems in real time while collecting data about asset performance.

Other investigations

Our Data & Analytics Program is looking into other projects at the moment.

As always, we assess potential projects based on what industry needs they meet and what benefits they can provide if successful.

At the moment, we are investigating two main projects. One is a review of best-practice for optimisation metrics. The other is a pump station digital twin project.
