ASSET PERFORMANCE & ENERGY OPTIMISATION PROGRAM
The IWN identified the need to create an asset performance and energy optimisation program in March 2015 and John Day from North East Water has been selected as the program leader.
A series of workshops identified a range of projects that would benefit the whole of the Victorian water sector. From these, five projects were selected for further support:
1. Large scale renewable energy
A feasibility report exploring opportunities for shared investment in all types of energy generation has been developed and indicates further detailed investigations are warranted. A project control group has been formed to explore both technical and governance aspects of this initiative.
2. Small scale renewable energy
A trial featuring renewable energy solutions to power a small town’s water and wastewater treatment plants is to proceed to construction. The project has been delayed while final technical details are being confirmed but is expected to be constructed early 2017. North East Water are working with Totally Renewable Yackandandah and SP Ausnet on this project.
3. Future state of electricity for Victorian water industry
Alternative energy procurement models have been considered and phase 1 of the new energy procurement project is under way with a mix between spot market, futures market and locked in prices being adopted by three water corporations. The lessons learnt from this project will inform other Victorian water corporations for future energy procurement with assistance from tools being put together by North East Water, Yarra Valley Water, Goulburn Valley Water and VicWater.
Trial technology has been installed and operated by North East Water for some months now. A report on the project is due early in 2017.
5. Aeration energy innovation
In conjunction with WSAA and interstate water supplier, all Victorian water corporations are participating in benchmarking their aeration energy use. This project commenced in June 2016. Trials of innovative solutions will begin within a year of benchmarking completion.
